TL;DR: Jenn-Air cooktop display messages split into notices and faults. HOT, LOC and PF are notices: the surface is hot, the controls are locked or the power blinked. F and U codes are faults, such as pan detection, overheating or communication errors, and a code that returns after a power reset needs a technician.

The Jenn-Air cooktop display messages fall into two groups that look alike but mean very different things. HOT, LOC and PF are status messages: the surface is hot, the controls are locked, or the power was interrupted. None of them is a fault. The F and U codes are fault messages, such as a pan detection error, an overheated element or a communication error, and a fault that keeps returning needs a technician. Knowing which group a message belongs to tells you whether to wipe the cooktop and carry on or to stop cooking.

HOTHot surface warning. The glass is still hot enough to burn. Not a fault.
LOCControl lock is active. The touch controls ignore you until the lock is released. Not a fault.
PFPower failure notice. Power was interrupted, and the control is telling you it restarted.
F1 to F9Fault codes for internal circuits, over-temperature, sensors, pan detection, memory, elements and power supply.
F47 and U6Communication errors inside the induction system.

What do HOT, LOC and PF mean on a Jenn-Air cooktop?

These are the messages you will see most often, and all three describe the cooktop doing its job. Treat them as information. The glossary below sets out each term plainly and tells you what, if anything, to do.

What does HOT mean, and how long does it stay on?

HOT is the hot surface indicator. After you turn a zone off, the glass and the area around it stay hot, and the display keeps showing HOT until the surface has cooled to a safe level. Induction glass heats from the pan, and radiant or gas models heat the glass directly, so the message can last for many minutes after cooking. Do not wipe the cooktop with a cloth or rest anything on it while HOT is lit.

If HOT stays on for a very long time after the cooktop is cold, or lights when no zone has been used, the sensor that reads the surface temperature may be misreporting. Our page on the Jenn-Air cooktop HOT message covers what the control is reporting.

What does LOC mean, and how do you clear it?

LOC means the control lock is active. It exists to stop children from turning on a zone and to stop a wet cloth from pressing the touch controls, and it also keeps the cooktop from reacting while you clean the glass. When the lock is on, the display shows LOC if you touch the controls, and the zones will not start.

To clear it, follow the release step in your use and care guide, which is usually a press and hold of the lock control for a few seconds. If the lock keeps coming back on its own, wipe the control area dry and check for a pan or a utensil resting on the touch panel, since moisture or an object can trigger it. See our Jenn-Air cooktop LOC page for more.

Most status messages clear with a press, a wait or a dry cloth.

What does PF mean?

PF stands for power failure. When the power is interrupted, even for a second, the control restarts and shows PF so you know that any cooking in progress has stopped. Touch a control to clear it, then restart what you were cooking. A single PF after a storm or a flicker is normal. If PF appears again and again with no outage you can explain, check the breaker and the connection, and mention it to a technician, because a loose supply wire can cause repeated restarts. Our Jenn-Air cooktop PF page describes the message.

What do the F and U codes mean on a Jenn-Air cooktop?

These are faults, not notices. They appear mostly on induction models, which have more electronics than gas or radiant ones. Our site lists these meanings:

F1Internal circuit error.
F2Over-temperature trip. The cooktop got hotter than the control allows.
F3Sensor open circuit.
F4Pan detection error. The cooktop cannot tell whether a pan is on the zone.
F5EEPROM error. The control memory has a problem.
F6Element overheated.
F7NTC sensor failure. A temperature sensor is not reading properly.
F9Power supply error.
F47Induction communication error.
U6Communication error.

Two of these are worth a closer look. F4 can appear for harmless reasons, such as a pan that is too small, off center or not magnetic, so check the cookware before you worry. Our Jenn-Air cooktop F4 page and our guide to getting the most from a Jenn-Air induction cooktop explain which pans work. F6 and F2 are heat protection, so let the cooktop cool, make sure nothing blocks the cooling vents and see whether the code returns. The F6 page shows the element overheating message. Communication codes such as F47 and U6, in contrast, point to the electronics. See the F47 page for the induction version.

Which messages can you handle, and which need a technician?

Start with this rule of thumb. HOT, LOC and PF are yours to handle: wait, unlock or restart. An F4 is yours to check once, by testing a different, flat, magnetic pan. Everything else should be treated as a fault. Switch the cooktop off at the breaker for about five minutes, switch it back on and watch for the same code. If it returns, the fault is live.

Do not lift the glass or open the cooktop yourself. Under it are induction coils, a power module and a cooling fan, all carrying mains power. Read how induction cooktops work to see why, and cooktop repair or replace if a repair is on the cards. Our Jenn-Air cooktop repair technicians read the code, test the part and bring the right replacement on the first visit. We are an independent repair company, not a factory service arm, and we will tell you when a repair is not worth doing. You can book a visit with the exact message and the model number.

Frequently asked questions
What does HOT mean on my Jenn-Air cooktop?
It means the glass surface is still hot enough to burn you. It is a safety message and not a fault, and it disappears when the surface has cooled.
How do I turn off LOC on a Jenn-Air cooktop?
Press and hold the lock control for a few seconds, as your use and care guide describes. If it keeps returning, dry the control area and check that nothing rests on it.
What does PF mean on a Jenn-Air cooktop?
PF means the power was interrupted and the control restarted. Touch a control to clear it. Repeated PF messages without an outage deserve a check of the supply.
Why does my Jenn-Air induction cooktop show an F4 code?
F4 is a pan detection error. Try a flat, magnetic pan that is the right size and centered on the zone before you assume a fault.
When should I call a technician?
Call if an F or U code comes back after a five-minute power reset. You can book a visit online.
