A Jenn-Air third level rack with wash is a shallow top rack that has its own jets, so utensils and flat items are washed by water aimed at them rather than by spray from the arm below. Not every Jenn-Air third rack works the same way. On our model pages the JDAF5924RM has a 3rd level rack with dedicated wash jets, the JDPSS246LM has a high-capacity 3rd rack with wash, and the JDTS3924SM has a Precise Fit 3rd rack designed specifically for cutlery. This guide explains how the rack and its jets work, how the three kinds differ, how to load each, and what to check when items on the top level come out dirty.
What is a Jenn-Air third level rack with wash?
A normal dishwasher has two racks, and the upper one is washed by an arm that throws water upward. Flat items laid across the top of the upper rack are the hardest to clean because they sit where the spray is weakest. A third level rack is a shallow tray above the upper rack. “With wash” means it is not just a shelf: it has its own jets that deliver water to the items on it. Our TriFecta wash guide describes the same idea at system level, with one pump feeding three separate water paths. This guide looks at the rack itself.
How do the three kinds of third rack on Jenn-Air models differ?
The names on the model pages point to three designs.
- 3rd level rack with dedicated wash jets (JDAF5924RM). The rack is fed by its own jets. This is the fully integrated Noir dishwasher with hidden controls.
- High-capacity 3rd rack with wash (JDPSS246LM). The page lists 11% more loading height on that model. It also has the superior glide upper rack and cinematic lighting on that page.
- Precise Fit 3rd rack for cutlery (JDTS3924SM). The page describes a cutlery-specific rack with a plasma coating. It is a cutlery-specific rack rather than a general-purpose tray.
The JDPSS246LL Rise model lists three racks and a 3rd rack, without giving a design name on its page. Check your owner’s manual for the exact rack on your model.

How do the wash jets reach the third level?
On a three-level machine, water has to reach three heights from one pump. Our TriFecta guide describes a feed tube that climbs the rear wall of the tub and delivers water to jets at each level. The third-level jets are small openings, so they are the first to block with a seed or a piece of label. The guide also explains why leveling matters: the tub has little margin for tilt, and a slightly low or twisted dishwasher can leave a haze on the third level while the lower rack is perfect. If only the top level comes out dirty, a blocked jet or a poorly seated rack is more likely than a failed pump.
How should you load a third level rack?
Treat it as a flat tray. Lay utensils, spatulas, ladles and small flat items along it, and keep tall items out, because anything that stands up into the roof of the tub can block the water or catch the rack as it slides. On the Precise Fit cutlery rack, follow the manual for how to place each piece so nothing nests. Keep sharp knives positioned as your manual directs. Close the door gently and check that the third rack is fully seated on its rails before you start a cycle, because a rack that is a little out of position can foul the arm below it.
For a wider loading guide, read about the upper and lower racks in our maintenance guide on the Jenn-Air dishwasher.
What if the top rack comes out dirty?
- Check that nothing is blocking the path: a lid, a tall item or a utensil sticking down.
- Confirm the rack is seated and rolls freely on its rails.
- With the dishwasher off, remove the rack and look at the small jets behind or beneath it. Clear them from the outside with a soft brush or a straightened paper clip, never a toothpick.
- Clean the filter, because a clogged filter lowers the flow to every level.
- Confirm the dishwasher is level in its opening. A change in cleaning quality that built up slowly is often a leveling or bracket issue.
Do not remove the feed tube, open the tub wall or work on the pump and wiring yourself. If water is leaking or you smell burning, switch the dishwasher off at the breaker. If the problem persists, see our guide to a Jenn-Air dishwasher not draining for related checks, or book service. Our Jenn-Air dishwasher repair technicians test the pump, the feed path and the spray components. We are an independent repair company, not a factory service arm.
Is a third level rack a reason to repair rather than replace?
A third rack is not by itself a reason to keep an old machine, but it is worth weighing. If the rest of the dishwasher is sound, a blocked jet or a worn rack part is a small repair. For a bigger decision, read dishwasher repair or replace. When you want a technician to look at the top level, book a visit and give us the model number.
